First off, let me start by saying that I love VRchat. I can talk to people all around the world while creating my own custom characters! There are also lots of fun activities you can do with other players.
One thing that I always wanted was to be able to create an avatar of myself so other players could see what I looked like, but it seems to not be possible with the current avatar creation system. I decided to try designing my own 3D model of myself so other players could see what I look like in VRchat.
How to make a custom vrchat avatar
I started by creating a ‘skin’ in a blender. I did this so I could learn how to bone it correctly, and also have the ability to animate parts of the model or use texture maps. It took me around 3-4 days to get everything rigged correctly. After that, I textured the skin with some custom self-made textures. I initially didn’t create any clothes/textures for the hands and feet, but after some time I decided to make them myself as well.
For exporting the final model, I used Blender’s .fbx file exporter (The .obj file type doesn’t work with VRChat). The only problem was that there wasn’t a single working tutorial on how to get the FBX file format of the blender into VRChat, so after some hard work, I finally managed to figure it out.

I want to share my experience with the best VRchat avatars that I’ve found. If you’re planning on making a custom vrchat avatar, then I highly recommend trying them out.
My personal favorite is the ” CyberFace ” by Hitachi . It’s a great-looking face, and there are some really nice textures included as well.
Another amazing custom avatar I’d recommend is the ” Deferred Male Avatar ” by Roguewolf. This avatar has a great amount of detail, and I was blown away by how much it looks like me. It’s also very realistic looking with his facial expressions and eyes behavior.
The different types of avatars available in VRChat
VRChat is a very diverse game so there are lots of different avatars to choose from. I really recommend that you try out as many as possible, and pick whatever looks best for you. You can use all kinds of avatar types such as:

Tips for choosing the right avatar for you
If you’re not sure which avatar to use, just go with the anime one. It’s a very nice-looking avatar type that has lots of different options for face/hair/clothing etc…
There are also some really cool avatars that have full-body clothes on them. I’m talking about things like pants, a shirt, and shoes. It might not sound that great but it does look really nice when done right.
If you’re looking to make your own custom vrchat avatar then I recommend the CyberFace by HitachiH, Avatar with full-body clothing by Roguewolf or Deferred male avatar by Roguewolf. These are some of my favorite avatars, and they’re definitely worth trying out.
