CyberpowerPC is a PC builder that offers custom-built PCs, prebuilt systems, and gaming laptops. It boasts an extensive selection of computers for gamers with the Gamer Xtreme series. The company’s latest addition to its lineup is the CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme VR Ready GXiVR8020A3 Desktop Gaming PC Review.
The “cyberpowerpc gamer xtreme specs” is a desktop gaming PC that has been designed to be VR Ready. The system comes with an Intel Core i7-7700K processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM and 1TB HDD.
The Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 is the latest edition of CyberpowerPC’s popular GXiVR8020 line of prebuilt gaming PCs, which we’ll be reviewing. In this review, we’ll look at the hardware of this computer and see what’s new compared to prior versions (both the GXiVR8020A2 and GXiVR8020A, which we’ve evaluated).
Note: CyberpowerPC has launched multiple different versions of this computer. This is a review for the GXiVR8020A3 model, which seems to be no longer available (as of June 2018). The GXiVR8020A5 is the current best-selling model, and the differences between it and the GXiVR8020A3 include the computer casing, CPU, and the lack of an optical drive in the A5 model against the A3 model. See our evaluations below for different versions:
CyberpowerPC’s prebuilt gaming computer alternatives are growing in popularity, although we’ve previously been dissatisfied with their lower-end products like the GUA3100A and GUA880. That all changed when we began examining their GXiVR8020 series, so let’s take a closer look at the GXiVR8020A3 and see what’s new.
CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 Overview
The Gamer Xtreme GXiVR8020A3 is a good prebuilt gaming PC that includes a mouse and keyboard, as well as a wireless USB adapter and Windows 10 operating system. The biggest difference between the GXiVR8020A3 and its predecessor is that the graphics card has been upgraded from an AMD RX480 to an AMD RX 580 by CyberpowerPC.
The GXiVR8020A3 is an incredible offer at its current retail price of roughly $720 – you couldn’t construct a computer this cheap yourself, and getting it completely completed by CyberpowerPC saves you at least $100. Despite the fact that we are still great supporters of DIY since it typically provides superior value for money, we can’t win this one.
The RX 580 graphics card was released in April 2017 and is capable of handling even the most demanding AAA games on high settings. This PC, like many desktop PCs, is completely upgradeable, but the hardware is all relatively new, so you could get by with the original configuration for a few years.
If you don’t like the appearance of this computer, CyberpowerPC offers another model (the GXiVR8020A4) that seems to be the same as the GXiVR8020A3 and has the same characteristics, but comes in a different casing. If you’re interested, you can read our review of the GXiVR8020A4 here.

Performance
Let’s take a look at each of the GXiVR8020A3’s separate hardware components.
Processor
We have nothing negative to say about the CyberpowerPC GXiVR8020A3’s CPU. It’s an Intel quad-core CPU from the current generation, the i5-7400, with a regular speed of 3.0GHz and a turbo boost to 3.5GHz. The CPU is new, having been introduced in the first quarter of 2017. The additional hardware on this version has also been upgraded to the newest Kaby Lake design, ensuring that you get all of the advantages of cutting-edge technology.
Graphics
The graphics card is the next item on the list, and it is unquestionably the most significant hardware component of any gaming machine. We’re pleased to note that CyberpowerPC has chosen the most recent graphics cards for these mid-level gaming projects – the AMD Radeon RX 580 4GB card used in this build was introduced in April 2017, ensuring that you receive all of the latest graphics processing technologies.
With their RX line of graphics cards, AMD has made a strong comeback, and they currently provide a high level of performance for the money. The RX 580 has replaced the RX 480, but it’s effectively the same card (read: same GPU) with a few minor tweaks like a higher clock and boost speed, which correlates to improved frame rates, as shown in the video below.
Memory
When it comes to system memory, the GXiVR8020A3 still has a total of 8 GB DDR4 RAM (2 x 4GB sticks), which is plenty for gaming. DDR4 RAM, in addition to being the most recent type of system memory, has certain power improvements over DDR3 in Intel’s current Kaby Lake architecture.
While it only has two RAM sticks, the GXiVR8020A3’s motherboard (reportedly the MSI Bazooka based on the B250 chipset) has four RAM slots, therefore that’s not a problem. As a result, there’s still enough area to add more RAM without having to remove the factory-installed memory.
One thing to keep in mind is that CyberpowerPC does not guarantee the RAM brand you’ll get. Depending on the availability of components, they tend to change the RAM’s specific manufacturer and model. This will not be a concern for most people, but it is something to be aware of if you are fussy and want a certain brand of memory.
Storage
The GXiVR8020A3 comes with a 1TB 7200RPM hard disk, which should be more than adequate for most users. It’s a pity that this build doesn’t feature a solid state drive (SSD), but we can’t really complain since you’re already getting a great deal. There’s enough of room within the casing for additional storage disks if you need them.
Case
The computer’s chassis is a Cooler Master Masterbox 5, and CyberpowerPC has equipped it with red LED-lit case fans that give it a pleasant overall aesthetic, especially because the case lighting and the large clear viewing glass work well together. If you decide to go that path in the future, extra case features like cable management, support for additional case fans, and/or liquid cooling make this an easily upgradeable PC. You also receive a DVD/RW optical drive and a USB wireless adaptor for internet access without a cable.
In the unboxing video below, you can get a good look at the GXiVR8020A3 itself:
Usage
The hardware of the GXiVR8020A3 is all bang for buck where it matters, with 2017 release dates for the big ticket components like the CPU and graphics card. So relax and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re receiving the most up-to-date gear that will last for years.
Performance is outstanding thanks to CyberpowerPC’s superb hardware choices, and this prebuilt gaming machine can easily handle practically everything you throw at it. It will play most, if not all, AAA gaming titles on high settings, and you’ll probably have at least 1–2 years of experience with this kind of gaming before you need to start dropping settings to high and medium when newer games are released.
If you want to use this PC for more demanding applications such as video editing, modeling, rendering, and the like, you may want to consider upgrading the system RAM. Most games require 8GB of RAM for most players, thus you shouldn’t have any problems with the original 8GB RAM unless you intend on utilizing the GXiVR8020A3 in even more demanding applications.
Because it can readily handle difficult game titles, utilizing this computer for daily tasks is no problem. If you want to get a little more performance out of your computer, you should consider installing a solid state drive (SSD), since it only comes with a hard disk drive (which a noticably slower than SSDs).
If you’re only looking for a computer to use on a daily basis, this machine is definitely overkill, and you’d be wasting money you don’t have. You may find the larger case and continual red lights bothersome (there’s no way to turn them off since they’re always on while the case fans are spinning). The GViXR8020A3 is a fantastic fit for people who intend on utilizing the computer as a daily machine in combination with casual or even more serious gaming.
Keep in mind that if you have older display monitors, you’ll likely require an adaptor to connect them to the RX 580 graphics card, which only offers display port or HDMI outputs. If your monitor supports VGA or DVI, you’ll need one of the adapters listed below:

Gaming Capabilities
So far, we’ve seen that the GXiVR8020A3 seems to be a decent gaming machine for most mid-range gamers in theory, so let’s see how it performs in user-reported real-world testing.
The i5-7400 CPU and RX 580 graphics card make for a formidable combo, and you should be able to play just much any new game at 1080p resolution on high or max settings without latency or stuttering. Also, until newer games become more demanding, you can generally anticipate this level of performance for the next few of years.
However, nothing beats watching some real-world examples, so check out the videos below for gameplay from a few titles that use the same CPU and graphics card as the GXiVR8020A3.
1. GTA V
Assassin’s Creed II
3. The game Fortnite
Virtual Reality (VR) is a kind of virtual
The GXiVR8020A3 also comes with the added benefit of being VR-ready. Where have you been if you haven’t heard about Virtual Reality gaming? But, really, as VR technology becomes more prevalent, be prepared for a whole new immersive gaming experience.
Anyway, since this computer has technology capable of handling virtual reality gaming, if you really wanted to, you could acquire a VR headset today and start playing virtual reality games in some form.
Virtual reality gaming, on the other hand, is still in its infancy. There aren’t many games available yet, and I imagine that not everyone is interested (some of the hardware can be pretty pricey). Still, knowing that this machine will be able to handle virtual reality games when they become more popular is comforting.
Headsets for Virtual Reality
If you want to go into virtual reality, the Occulus Rift and the HTC Vive are the two primary headset choices right now, and both can be utilized with the GXiVR8020A3 PC.
The Oculus Rift is one of the most popular virtual reality headsets, and the whole package includes handheld tracking controllers:
PC-Powered VR Gaming Headset Oculus Rift S
- Top VR gaming library: Blast, slash, and fly through the best VR gaming library. The Oculus Rift S allows you to play hundreds of games and exclusives that are now available in the Oculus store, with more more on the way.

The GXiVR8020A3 is being upgraded.
We’re really satisfied with CyberpowerPC’s construction for this price range, but the greatest thing about the GXiVR8020A3 is that it’s future-proofed. Although you won’t need to update it for a while, it is completely upgradeable, and the superb case and motherboard choices will enable gamers to experiment with a variety of upgrades either right away or later.
When purchasing a PC that you may want to improve in the future, the most important item to look for is a decent ‘foundation’ to work with – often the casing, motherboard, and CPU. This makes it reasonably simple to update additional components. The GXiVR8020A3 excels in this area, so if you’re thinking about buying one and updating it as it ages, this is a fantastic option. The following are some common improvements that you may wish to consider now or in the future:
- Upgrade to a solid state drive (particularly if you run your Operating System off the SSD, expect to see an instant gain in speed for load/operation times)
- Upgrade your RAM (only necessary if you feel the 8GB RAM is holding you back)
- Upgraded power supply (optional)
This video illustrates how to update the RAM and install a solid state drive in the previous version (the GXiVR8020A2), however as the only change between these two machines is the graphics card, all upgrades are also applicable to the GXiVR8020A3 model.
Upgrade to an SSD
If you have some extra cash or just wish to enjoy quicker boot and loading times, an SSD may be installed right away in this machine. Seriously, if you’ve never used an SSD before, you won’t be disappointed – and if you have, you won’t be able to go back to the slower hard drives.
The GXiVR8020A3 comes with plenty of storage, but that doesn’t mean you can’t install another SSD (say, 120GB) and save your most frequently used apps there. If you’re prepared to reinstall or clone your Operating System (OS) to the SSD, you’ll be able to take advantage of all the speed advantages that an SSD provides.
The Kingston HyperX Fury 120GB SSD is a solid-state drive that we suggest, or the Samsung 850 EVO line for a higher-quality drive.
Other Upgrades in the Future
If you really want to update this machine, we’ve put together a detailed list of specs at the bottom of this post that you may find useful.
You don’t have to make any improvements right away, but in a few years, you may want to consider:
- Upgrade your graphics card (though the RX 580 will definitely stand you in good stead for at least a couple of years)
- Upgrade to overclocking (Not essential at this moment since the Core i5-7400 CPU is very new and performs well in benchmarks)
Neither of them are absolutely required right now or in the near future, but they are useful to keep in mind for individuals who prefer to plan ahead. Some users have suggested:
- Because the motherboard only has one PCIe-x16 slot, you won’t be able to use two graphics cards.
- Because the original power supply is just 600W, you may need to update or replace it in the future.
Upgraded Power Supply
We also wanted to make a point on updating the GXiVR8020A3’s power supply. There are usually just two major reasons to improve your power supply:
- If your current power source isn’t enough for your gear (e.g. you have a 300W power supply but your components might require a minimum of a 600W power supply).
- If your current power supply is of dubious quality (for example, if it was made by a low-grade manufacturer or if its standards aren’t up to par).
Because a low-quality power supply has the potential to harm your computer hardware, it’s critical to ensure that it can adequately feed all of your components. Voltage spikes, for example, might harm components if the power provided is not ‘clean.’
Because of reason #2, you may want to investigate upgrading the power supply on this computer. While this is only conjecture, we’ve heard stories that CyberpowerPC has in the past used lower-quality power supply (at this price range, they have to save money on certain components). They’ve said that they change the model/make of various components to accommodate parts availability, which includes the power supply.
While it’s not a deal-breaker, we suggest that you conduct some research into the power supply that came with your CyberpowerPC to see if anybody has had any problems with it in the past. If anything seems to be suspect, you should replace your power supply.
For this reason, we suggest EVGA power supply since most of their products have a 3-year guarantee and are 80+ certified. For the Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8020A3 desktop PC, the 600W model below is an excellent choice.

Summary
We can’t match the Gamer Xtreme GXiVR8020A3 prebuilt by CyberpowerPC for the price, and we can’t even beat it with a DIY build. When we tested prior iterations of this setup (the GXiVR8020A and GXiVR8020A2), we were already pleased, but now that this product has been upgraded with hardware that runs the current Intel Kaby Lake architecture and the enhanced RX 580 graphics card, it’s even better.
Sure, there are a few minor flaws, such as the lack of a solid state drive and a potentially low-quality power supply, but at the end of the day, this prebuilt is hands down one of the best value-for-money prebuilts we’ve seen, and you’re getting a good graphics card and processor, as well as a case and motherboard that should make future upgrades a breeze. You couldn’t put this together yourself for the same amount, and why would you when you can have it all done for you, complete with an operating system?
The GXiVR8020A3 is a good foundation mid-to-high range computer to start with for any serious gamer, whether you’re looking for a gaming computer that’s ready to go out of the box or one you can improve in the future.
