There’s a specific kind of frustration that comes from watching something work, then stop working, then almost work, then break again. That’s what the past two years of trying to block YouTube ads in Chrome felt like for me.
I’m not a developer. I don’t have the patience to maintain custom filter lists or pull userscripts from GitHub repositories. What I wanted was something I could install and forget – a proper ad blocker youtube solution that handled YouTube specifically, kept working after updates, and didn’t ask anything from me after the initial setup. That last part is the actual strategy. Not defeating ad blockers technically – just making them annoying enough that people stop trying.
Why Static Filter Lists Keep Losing
Extensions that rely purely on static filter lists are playing defense against a moving target. Every time YouTube updates its ad delivery, the filter list needs a corresponding update. In practice this means the extension works until it doesn’t, then you’re searching Reddit for the newest workaround, then that works for a few weeks, then the cycle repeats.
I did this for about fourteen months before I stopped.
What Actually Changed When I Switched
The first thing I noticed was that the “ad blocker detected” banner stopped appearing.
That sounds minor. It isn’t. That banner is specifically designed to create friction – it blocks the video, requires a click to dismiss, and reappears if you don’t whitelist the site. After months of it showing up every second or third video I opened, its absence was immediately noticeable.
Pre-Rolls and Mid-Rolls, Gone
Pre-rolls stopped appearing across the board. Not most of them. All of them.
The mid-roll interruptions – the ones that cut in at the six-minute mark of a tutorial video at the exact moment the person is explaining something – gone.
Faster Page Loads
Page load time dropped. A YouTube page without ad scripts running in the background loads measurably faster. On my work laptop the difference is visible. The browser stays cooler and the fan runs less, which tells me something about how much compute those ad scripts were using.
The Privacy Question That Most People Skip
Here’s something worth knowing about how some ad blockers operate.
Certain extensions collect data about your browsing to improve their filtering – what sites you visit, what requests get blocked, how long you spend on different pages. That data has value, and free products need revenue from somewhere. The tricky part is that a product blocking ads on your behalf while simultaneously profiling your behavior is doing something structurally similar to the thing it’s supposed to be protecting you from.
How Stands Handles This
Stands doesn’t log browsing behavior. The blocking runs locally, and nothing about what you watch or how long you spend watching it gets sent to a server somewhere. For a product that sits between your browser and YouTube and sees every video you open, that matters more than most people stop to consider.
A Realistic Picture of How It Performs
Eight months of daily use on YouTube, across multiple devices on the same Chrome account.
The “ad blocker detected” prompt has appeared twice. Both times, refreshing the page resolved it. I don’t know if that’s because Stands updated something in the background or because YouTube’s detection has occasional false negatives. Either way, two interruptions in eight months is a different experience than the one I had with my previous setup.
Mid-roll ads: zero that I can remember.
Pre-rolls: also zero.
YouTube Shorts on desktop: no ads in the Shorts feed.
YouTube via Chrome on mobile is a different situation – extension blocking doesn’t apply to the mobile app, which is worth knowing upfront. For mobile, the options are different and outside what I’m covering here.
The Thing That Keeps Me From Switching Back
I’ve recommended Stands to five people in the past year. All five are still using it.
That’s the most honest endorsement I can give. Most tech recommendations I make to friends and family generate a follow-up question within two weeks, either because something stopped working or because setup was more complicated than expected.
None of them have asked me a follow-up question about this one.
The bar for a YouTube ad blocker isn’t high in theory – block the ads, keep working, don’t cause problems. In practice, given how much engineering effort goes into the other side of that equation, it’s harder to clear than it looks.
Eight months in, I still haven’t thought about it.
