The future of OLED and mini-LED: what to expect from Apple and others

OLED technology uses a layer of organic material (carbon molecules) between two electrodes that produce light when an electrical current is passed through. The advantages of OLED include very thin panels, wide viewing angles, and excellent power efficiency. Additionally, no backlight is needed since each pixel can create light and color.

Mini LEDs are also based on LED technology but on a much smaller scale – typically a few millimeters in size for small displays and up to several centimeters for large screens such as TVs or monitors. The main advantage of mini LEDs is their enhanced brightness compared to other LED types, which makes them very well suited for direct lighting applications such as backlit keyboards or bar lighting. Additionally, their smaller size makes them more cost-effective than traditional LEDs while still offering comparable performance levels.

The most important advantage of OLEDs is their ability to produce pure black and deep rich colors due to the individual pixels emitting light, rather than a single light source used on traditional LCDs. Mini-LEDs are a similar technology to OLEDs but with more advanced features such as higher peak brightness capabilities, improved viewing angles, and reduced response times compared to traditional LCDs. The increased pixel count of mini-LED is intended to reduce this issue, but it has yet to be proven how effective this will be in practice.

Regarding power consumption, LCDs refuse to give LED/OLED technologies a fair fight due to their superior efficiency and lower production costs. While OLED/mini-LED technology will reduce these shortcomings significantly—with manufacturers claiming up to 50% energy savings—LCDs remain unchallenged in terms of cost efficiency and power consumption.

Finally, a limitation of mini-LED technology could be the size constraints imposed by having so many LEDs on a single display panel. This could limit product design, particularly in thinness (ultra slim screens), as the product needs thicker space for current spreading plates and other components necessary for thorough heat management. However, this should all improve with tighter manufacturing practices over time).

As far as the rumored LED-backlit mini-LED display goes, this would be found on a future MacBook Air. Further reports suggest that it could arrive as early as 2022 to accompany Apple’s 11th-generation Tiger Lake CPUs for superior internal performance.

If such claims turn out to be true, then consumers can look forward to brighter displays with improved picture quality from both Apple devices this year plus in ensuing years. Although prices are yet to be officially revealed, analysts agree with improved image clarity thanks to millions of individually controllable LED locations likely leading to an increase in cost when matched against existing LCD or generic LED monitors used by existing laptop models.

Meanwhile others have begun dabbling with micro-LED display technology such as Apple’s 2020 iPad Pro while Microsoft is currently developing a gaming monitor which supposedly features mini LED lighting built directly onto the back panel rather than into bezels as previously seen on certain gaming monitors such as Asus’ ROG Swift PG27UQX or Acer’s Predator X27 series displays.

It remains to be seen what other companies may decide to make use of these emerging technologies in their designs, but it appears that both OLED and mini-LED are likely to become more common over time given the many potential benefits they offer consumers in terms of brightness, color accuracy, contrast levels and power consumption efficiency over traditional LCD/IPS panels commonly found on laptops and other devices today.
